Larks in the Park

Larks in the ParkOur friends from the Friends of Mile End Park (we have lots of friends!) sent us a copy of the newspaper report on their annual festival from summer 2008, and we thought we would share some of the highlights with you. We have tried to reflect the event in this selection of photos too. Joan from the Friends’ Committee wrote to say “Thank you for your generous gift of £700 and presence of rides at the Park Life Summer Fair. This was greatly appreciated and over 1000 people enjoyed the day.” Below is the article from the local press she kindly sent us.

“At this year’s Park Life Festival revellers enjoyed Fairground Rides, clowns, morris men, comedy and music. Organised by the Friends of Mile End Park in partnership with Tower Hamlets Council and Action for Bow, Park Life is an annual event aimed at encouraging residents to enjoy the great outdoors.

Attractions at this year’s summer fair included a dog show, farmers’ market, surf boarding, comedy Morris Dancers, a table football match and a community arts and craft show.

Lead Councillor for culture Rofique U Ahmed says “Park Life is bursting at the seams with exciting events and activities. It is a great way for families to enjoy Mile End Parkmaking the most of a Sunday afternoon. Michael Rowan, director of the park, added “We were blessed with good weather on Sunday and the sun shone all day. This year’s event had a great feel, like a village fete in the middle of the East End.

Joan Griffiths from the Friends group was thrilled with the turn out and wanted to ensure residents had a great day out. “We have been holding a summer fair at Mile End Park for five years and it is our way of saying thank you to the residents who have supported us.”

We at Irvin Leisure were delighted to once again be part of this community festival and congratulate all of those involved, including African drummers, Caribbean Dancers and of course the competitors in the various shows, including the pooches in the dog show! The Friends of Mile End Park are seeking more volunteers and you can email them oninfo@fomep.org.uk.
